First produced in ancient Thrace, the cucumber has remained a favourite fruit for thousands of years across the globe. Cucumbers grown fresh to eat are called slicing cucumbers and are almost always eaten in their unripe green form which is sweeter than the ripe yellow cucumber. They are very high in vitamin C, and also contain vitamin A, calcium and iron.
